Patience…Grace…Struggle with these some days? Especially true on days when it seems nothing is going your way and your plan is derailed? Perhaps the car won’t start, internet is down at work, sick kid, employee didn’t show, or all of the above? I’ve had a few of these lately, and it can feel like the frustration is overflowing.

On these days, there are seemingly two choices:

1. Throw up your arms and just decide the day is terrible and a total loss.

2. Re-focus and take charge and make a conscious choice to NOT have a terrible day.

Hard days can sometimes be very difficult to turn around, but here are a few things I have tried lately and guess what? They worked.

  • Do something else. Go for a walk, workout, spend some time in meditation or prayer. Taking time to just simply walk away for a minute and count to 10 can make a huge difference, and then say to yourself, “I will have a good day.” Period, end of story.
  • Write it down. Note all the frustrations, and then write down all the blessings you have in your life. Soon, the blessings will make you smile, and things feel a bit better.
  • Be still and breathe. Try as hard as you can to not think about anything else, and just breathe. Try the 4-7-8 method: https://health.clevelandclinic.org/4-7-8-breathing/ and you will be much calmer and refreshed.
  • Get some rest and start again. If nothing seems to be helping, because sometimes it’s just too much, get through it and then set an early bedtime. Get some rest and be grateful that there is a new day tomorrow!

We all have the choice to make the day better, to have a bit more patience and grace, even when it seems impossible. The next time you are at your wit’s end, try one or all of these options above and see if you can move past it. Or, if you have something better, let us know.

Have a good day today!
